The title of “Tea Party” is not enforced by any group or agency. Consequently, anyone can make a website or Facebook group and claim to be a state, regional, or local Tea Party. While I certainly don’t claim to speak on behalf of all Tea Party groups, we were warned by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, that there would be fake “Tea Party” groups popping up on the internet and on Facebook for the sole purpose of pushing a particular agenda. This is now happening in Alabama. Here are some questions to ask yourself when you find a site and are not sure if it is a real, honest Tea Party group.
- Has the group had any public events, protests, or rallies?
- Are the group’s leaders easy to find on their site, identified by name with some way to contact them?
- Do they have a statement giving their core principles or the purpose of their group?
- Do the articles on their site follow their own stated principles?
- Do their articles seem to be “fair and balanced” or do they drip with condescension and bias, especially when discussing conservative candidates? Remember there is a difference between stating the truthful position of candidates and intentionally painting someone with the broad brush of unsubstantiated statements or derision.
- Do they genuinely want to educate people or do they seem to put undue effort into a narrow agenda?
If you find a group that fails some or all of these questions, don’t use their site, don’t send their address to anyone, don’t subscribe. They only gain legitimacy if people view their material and participate in their forums. Be smart, be informed, and be aware. There are several blogs and posts on sites that would fail such a test that have made disparaging about me or the Huntsville Tea Party. If any of you have doubts or concerns about my actions, my character, or the way that the Huntsville Tea Party is being led, I would ask that you contact me for the truth instead of making a rash judgment or hasty decision based on rumors without evidence and before spreading such things by email or Facebook. I value the integrity and image of the Huntsville Tea Party as well as my own.

I'm sure most of you have been following the story on the new push for a health care bill. President Obama has called for an up-or-down vote on his new health care reform bill (that is approximately 2,700 pages and was just unveiled last week) within the NEXT FEW WEEKS! Here is an article about it in the New York Times.
Folks, I know we've been working hard all year against the federal government's encroachment into our daily lives. We must DIG IN now and work as hard as we can to stop this bill. We can begin by respectfully calling congressmen who can be influenced. Here is the 1st list of Congressmen to call: Harry Mitchell (202) 225-2190 (480) 946-2411 Gabrielle Giffords (202) 225-2542 (520) 881-3588 Ann Kirkpatrick (202) 225-2315 (928) 226-6914 Jerry McNerney (202) 225-1947 925-833-0643 John Salazar 202-225-4761 970-245-7107 Jim Hines (202) 225-5541 (866) 453-0028 Alan Grayson (202) 225-2176 (407) 841-1757 Bill Foster (202) 225-2976 630-406-1145 Baron Hill 202 225 5315 812 288 3999 Mark Schauer (202) 225-6276 (517) 780-9075 Gary Peters (202) 225-5802 (248) 273-4227 Dina Titus (202) 225-3252 702-256-DINA (3462) Carol Shea-Porter (202) 225-5456 (603) 743-4813 Tim Bishop (202) 225-3826 (631) 696-6500 John Hall (202) 225-5441 (845) 225-3641 x49371 Bill Owens (202) 225-4611 (315) 782-3150 Mike Arcuri (202)225-3665 (315)793-8146 Dan Maffei (202) 225-3701 (315) 423-5657 Earl Pomneroy (202) 225-2611 (701) 224-0355 Steven Driehaus (202) 225-2216 (513) 684-2723 Mary Jo Kilroy (202) 225-2015 (614) 294-2196 Zach Space (202) 225-6265 (330) 364-4300 Kathy Dahlkemper (202) 225-5406 (814) 456-2038 Patrick Murphy (202) 225-4276 (215) 826-1963 Christopher Carney (202) 225-3731 (570) 585-9988 Paul Kanjorski (202) 225-6511 (570) 825-2200 John Spratt (202) 225-5501 (803)327-1114 Tom Perriello (202) 225-4711 (276) 656-2291 Alan Mollohan (202) 225-4172 (304) 623-4422 Nick Rahall (202) 225-3452 (304) 252-5000 Steve Kagen (202) 225-5665 (920) 437-1954

A volunteer has stepped up to lead an Outreach Committee, that will be working on networking in our community and speaking about the Tea Party movement to different groups of people. If you are interested in helping us with this committee in any way, whether it be planning, helping us find opportunities, or speaking in front of groups yourself, please contact Chad Capps, our "Strategy Coordinator" at strategy@huntsvilleteaparty.com.
