With America focused on health care reform, a move that would take over 1/6 of our economy, the Senate is trying to pass a bill that would give the federal government broad powers over the other 5/6 OF OUR ECONOMY.   Huntsville Tea Party has been personally informed by the author of that article (who is well-connected in DC politics) that Senator Richard Shelby is getting pressured by the White House to fold on this!

Because of Senator Shelby's unique position on the Banking Committee, he alone has the power to kill this bill.  We need you to contact Senator Shelby and ask him to KILL THIS BILL - and please spread the word to anyone else who can contribute to the effort!

You can email Senator Shelby here.

Call him here: 202-224-5744.

Fax him here: 202-224-3416.

Spread the word to everyone you know in Alabama!

UPDATE:  This story is picking up steam.  Here are some links to new articles about the issue.

Alabama Public Housing Legislative Update PDF Print E-mail

The following information was given to us by the South Huntsville Civic Association  http://www.southhsv.org/

As you are aware, Rep. Mike Ball and Sen. Arthur Orr have introduced a public housing bill to require transparency from Housing Authorities in Alabama. This issue is not limited to South Huntsville residents.  It also impacts the surrounding areas that are of interest to the Huntsville Housing Authority, such as Madison, Providence and Hampton Cove.  Many of you have asked what can be done.

One very important action is to sign a petition in support of the public housing bill getting passed. Right now there is not a firm deadline on signing the petition, as the related legislation is stalled. The petition (attached) can be printed, signed and mailed back to SHCA at the following address:

South Huntsville Civic Association
P.O. Box 12271
Huntsville, AL 35815

In addition, we have several opportunities for Madison County residents to sign this petition. Please stop by one of these locations and show your support for the bill and our local businesses. It is very important that our representatives see how many residents expect support and passage of this bill.

Locations for the petition signing include:

Coffee Tree
7900 Bailey Cove Road SE #A
Huntsville, AL 35802
(256) 880-6464

Angels Island Coffee House
7538 Memorial Parkway SW
Huntsville, AL 35803
(256) 319-3424

You can also contact Sen. Mitchem's office Even if you have contacted him on this issue before, do it again.  Be polite, but firm in stating that you expect this bill to be placed on the Senate calendar without further delay.  Make it clear that the fate of this legislation will be your central deciding factor when casting your vote this fall.  If you have friends or family living elsewhere in Sen. Mitchem's district (all of Marshall County, including Guntersville, Albertville, Arab, and Boaz), encourage them to contact him, as well.

On the House side, the chairman of the committee where the bill is currently stalled is Rep. Bill Dukes of Decatur.  If you have friends or family who live in Decatur, encourage them to contact Rep. Dukes and urge him to push this bill to a vote in his committee.  This issue affects Decatur, too, since they also have a public housing authority.
